Indicative ratings from a wholesale manufacturing perspective. "Cost" is relative to genuine leather = high.
| Material | Relative Cost | Durability | Best For | Sustainability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PU Leather | Low | Medium–High | Fashion totes, crossbody, clutches | Moderate |
| Genuine Leather | High | Very High | Premium / luxury lines | Lower (processing impact) |
| Canvas / Jute | Low | Medium | Totes, beach, eco brands | High (natural fibers) |
| Nylon / Polyester | Low | High | Travel, sport, commuter | Low–Moderate |
| Recycled rPET | Low–Medium | Medium–High | Eco fashion, GRS lines | High (GRS certified) |
| Apple / Cactus Leather | Medium | Medium–High | Vegan premium, sustainable | Very High |
The workhorse of wholesale fashion bags. Consistent finish, lightweight, water-resistant, and a tiny fraction of leather's cost. Ideal for trend-driven collections where margin and turnaround matter most.
Premium feel and exceptional lifespan. Best for higher retail-price lines. Costs 3–5x PU and requires more care, but commands stronger brand perception and repeat purchase.
Natural, printable, and great for totes, beach bags, and eco positioning. Heavier than synthetics and less water-resistant, but aligns with sustainable and artisanal branding.
Lightweight, strong, and water-resistant. The right pick for travel, commuter, gym, and sport bags where function beats formality.
rPET (from bottles), apple leather, and cactus leather deliver eco claims with documentation (GRS available). Perfect for brands marketing sustainability without sacrificing look.
Combine materials — leather trim on canvas, PU body with woven handles, metallic hardware — to hit a specific price and aesthetic. Jinman develops mixed-material samples on request.

The material questions buyers ask most — answered directly.
The most common handbag materials are PU (polyurethane) leather, genuine leather, canvas, nylon, and polyester. Eco-friendly alternatives now include recycled rPET, apple leather, and cactus (vegan) leather. Jinman Bags works with all of these and helps brands choose by budget, durability, and sustainability goals.
PU leather is the most popular choice for wholesale fashion bags: it costs a fraction of genuine leather, is lightweight, water-resistant, and offers consistent color and finish at scale. Genuine leather is more premium, durable, and ages well but costs 3–5x more and needs more care. For most private-label and fast-fashion brands, PU delivers the best margin and look-to-cost ratio; choose genuine leather for high-end lines.
Canvas (cotton or jute) is best for structured totes, beach bags, and eco-conscious brands — it prints well and feels natural. Nylon is lighter, stronger, water-resistant, and better for travel, commuter, and sport bags. Canvas suits lifestyle and sustainable positioning; nylon suits functional and lightweight products.
Recycled / vegan leathers include rPET (recycled polyester from bottles), apple leather (apple-pomace by-product), and cactus leather (from nopal cactus). They look and feel close to PU but carry a lower environmental footprint and support 'eco' marketing claims. Jinman supplies GRS-certified rPET and apple/cactus options with documentation.
The most eco-friendly options are recycled rPET, apple leather, and cactus leather, followed by organic cotton canvas. They use waste or renewable inputs and lower virgin-plastic demand. Genuine leather is durable (long lifespan) but has higher processing impact. Jinman can provide GRS certification and material-compliance documentation for eco lines.
Match material to positioning and price: PU for affordable fashion (best margin), genuine leather for premium, canvas/jute for natural/eco totes, nylon for functional/travel, and rPET/apple/cactus for sustainable claims. Consider target retail price, durability needs, and whether you need eco-certification. Choosing a shell material is a set of trade-offs, not a search for the "best" option. The right answer depends on your price point, your market's climate, and what your customers expect the bag to survive.
| Material | Abrasion resistance | Water behaviour | Weight | Relative cost | Best application |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-grain leather | Excellent | Absorbs; needs finish | Heavy | High | Premium, long-life goods |
| Split / bonded leather | Moderate | Absorbs; prone to cracking | Medium | Low-medium | Entry price points |
| PU (polyurethane) | Good | Repels; wipeable | Light | Low-medium | Fashion, volume retail |
| PVC | Good | Waterproof | Medium | Low | Beach, transparent styles |
| Canvas / cotton | Good | Absorbs unless treated | Medium | Low-medium | Casual, eco-positioned |
| Nylon / polyester | Excellent | Repels; fast drying | Very light | Low-medium | Travel, commuter, sport |
| RPET recycled | Good | Depends on coating | Light | Medium | Sustainability-led ranges |
| Non-woven PP | Low | Repels | Very light | Very low | Promotional, giveaway |
Two components determine whether a bag feels expensive more than the shell does. Lining: a smooth, well-fitted lining with clean seams reads as quality even on a modest shell; a loose, shiny one undermines premium materials. Printed or branded linings add cost and lead time but lift perceived value significantly. Hardware: zinc alloy is the volume standard and plates well; brass is heavier and more expensive but takes a richer finish; stainless resists corrosion better in humid or coastal markets; plastic hardware cuts weight and cost but reads as entry-level. Plating matters too - a cheap plating tarnishes within months and generates returns that cost more than the saving.
Stocked materials move fastest. Anything requiring a mill run or a custom colour match adds weeks before cutting begins, and usually carries its own minimum. If you are working to a fixed launch date, confirm material availability at quotation stage rather than at sampling - this is the most common cause of a slipped delivery that is not the factory's fault.
Nylon and full-grain leather lead on abrasion resistance, for very different price points. PU performs well for fashion cycles but is a different proposition - good looks over a season rather than decades of service.
Standard PU coatings can crack under sustained high heat. For Gulf and tropical markets we specify heat-stable coatings. Tell us your destination and we select accordingly.
