The shell material defines a bag's look, price point, and durability. Below are the materials most commonly used in wholesale handbag production.
A split-leather or fabric base coated with polyurethane. The most common "vegan leather" in the mid-market. Soft hand-feel, lower cost than genuine leather, and highly customizable in embossing and color. See our vegan leather wholesale guide →
A plastic-based coated material. Cheaper and more water-resistant than PU but stiffer and less eco-friendly. Common in promotional and low-cost tote programs.
Animal hide. Full-grain is the highest quality (durable, develops patina); top-grain is sanded and lighter. Premium positioning, higher unit cost. Requires REACH/CA Prop 65 compliant tanning for EU/US.
A plain-woven fabric, often 10-24 oz. Durable and casual. Organic cotton canvas is popular for the sustainable segment. Read about GOTS organic cotton bags →
A woven fabric with patterns integrated into the weave (not printed). Gives a premium, textured look without extra trims.
Cork oak bark bonded to a fabric backing. Lightweight, water-resistant, and renewable (harvested without felling the tree). A rising eco-material for statement bags.
Natural bast fibers. Hemp is strong and antimicrobial; linen is breathable with a raw, artisanal feel. Both suit the eco / slow-fashion niche.
Nylon regenerated from post-consumer waste (fishing nets, bottles). Strong, lightweight, and increasingly demanded by EU brands. See GRS-certified recycled bags →
Synthetic wovens. Nylon is abrasion-resistant (great for backpacks); polyester is print-friendly and cheap. Often used for linings and sport/casual bags.
Synthetic foam (wet-suit material). Stretchy, padded, and water-resistant — the backbone of the "neoprene tote" trend.
High-density polyethylene sheet. Paper-like but tear- and water-resistant. Used for ultra-light, recyclable mailer-style bags.
Bio-based leather alternatives made from apple pomace / cactus pulp blended with PU. Lower carbon than animal leather; premium eco positioning. Compare vegan leather options →
Mesh: open-weave, breathable (beach/sport). Felt: pressed non-woven (structured, matte, often recycled polyester).
